A Kenyan driver claimed to have tested positive for Covid-19 after ferrying ‘fake’ mourners carrying an empty coffin from Nairobi to Homa Bay County has given his side of the story.
Last Saturday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the driver and his group carried an empty coffin and forged documents claiming they were headed to a burial in order to fool police officers into allowing them to leave Nairobi.
This was after the government banned the movement of people in and out of Nairobi metropolitan area to curb the spread of Covid-19 disease.
Kagwe said the group succeeded in their mission to leave Nairobi but they were intercepted by law enforcement officers in Homa Bay County and were found to be carrying an empty casket.
“They were immediately put in quarantine and today, I can confirm, that the driver is positive. This person has now taken the disease to Homa Bay for very selfish reasons,” said Kagwe.
The said driver, identified only as Kevin, has released a video online disputing claims by CS Kagwe that he tested positive for the virus.

“I’m not sick, I’m now in the isolation center and up to now, I have not received any medication, if it is true that I’m sick, why are they not treating me?” Kevin poses in the video.
Kevin and his family members have also denied claims that their kin faked the burial plans. He is presently in quarantine at Malela, Ndhiwa in Homa Bay county.
But speaking on Citizen TV, Ministry of Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said that Kevin is asymptomatic.
“Kelvin is our case number 257. He was tested at KEMRI, Kisumu and his results came back positive for covid-19. He is one of those people who are asymptomatic but test positive, and that forms about 56% of the total number of people who we have tested they have turned positive,” said Amoth.
