Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has been released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 or an alternative of Sh500,000 bond with one surety of a similar amount.
Saburi, who has been in custody since April 3rd, was freed on Thursday by Mombasa Resident Magistrate Elvis Micheka, who faulted the prosecution for failing to provide sufficient reasons why he should be denied bail.
The court directed Saburi, who recovered from Covid-19 at the Coast General Hospital, to undertake self-quarantine for 14 days.
He was further ordered to surrender his passport and refrain from contacting any witnesses in the case in which he is charged for failing to self-quarantine over the coronavirus disease after returning to the country from Germany early last month.
Saburi was last week charged that on diverse dates between March 6th and March 22nd, 2020, while suffering from an infectious disease (Covid-19), he knowingly and unlawfully exposed himself in public, without taking any precautions.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and has told the court that he has never tested positive for the bug as alleged by the Health Ministry. The case will be mentioned on May 5th, 2020.
