Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have recovered part of the cargo worth millions of shillings that was stolen from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Saturday.
The package containing mobile phones worth Sh120 million was stolen after members of an organized criminal gang hijacked a truck transporting the cargo from JKIA to a warehouse in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
The truck, an Isuzu FRR of registration number KBZ 628X, was later found dumped along Masai Road in Nairobi with all the cargo missing.
On Tuesday, the DCI said officers arrested four suspects in connection with the incident and after interrogation, they led detectives to a house at Muimara Estate, Imara Daima in Nairobi where part of the cargo was found.
629 out of the 750 cartons stolen from the lorry were recovered from the house while 121 were missing and efforts to recover them are still ongoing, the DCI said.
The four suspects are Mwangangi Kyalo, Jacob Waithaka, Patrick Irungu, and Newton Mwenda, all aged between 35 and 45 years. DCI said the driver of the truck, identified as 40-year-old Daniel Kivuti, has gone into hiding.
