The Health Ministry has appealed to Kenyans holding oxygen cylinders that are not in use to surrender them to the government.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the cylinders will help the ministry stock enough oxygen as the fight against the coronavirus pandemic intensifies.
“I would like to make a special plea to those who are in possession of oxygen cylinders that are not in use to kindly avail them to us,” she noted.
“We require these cylinders as they aid in boosting our capacity to be able to serve our patients, especially those in critical care who may require oxygen supplementation.”
Dr. Mwangangi further called on members of the public to embrace a ‘One for All’ approach, saying there must be unity if Kenya is to win the war on Covid-19.
“Through the National Emergency Response Committee, we’re engaging all our different partners in Kenya and across the world to ensure that we have a good supply of ventilators,” she added.
Kenyan billionaire industrialist Narendra Raval has already donated Sh100 million worth of oxygen to all government hospitals.
Narendra, who is the CEO of the Devki Group, announced the move through his Twitter page last week, saying the oxygen will be used in the fight against the disease.
“I hereby confirm the pledge to donate oxygen worth KES100m to all government hospitals throughout the country,” Narendra said in a tweet.
He added: “Oxygen will be collected from our Mombasa, Ruiru, and Athi River Devki Steel Mills Ltd Factories in exchange of empty cylinders.”
