22 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Kenya within the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.
This brings the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 81. Three patients have so far recovered while one has died.
In a media briefing on Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the 22 new cases were recorded from over 300 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
“We have tested over 300 Kenyans and out of those 22 have tested positive. This is the largest number we have received in a day,” said Kagwe, adding that 21 of them were in quarantine.
“That tells you the importance of the exercise we have been carrying out because they would have infected other people,” Kagwe said.
The new patients include eighteen Kenyans, two Pakistan citizens and two Cameroon nationals. 13 out of the 22 new cases are males while the rest are females.
7 of the latest cases were recorded in Mombasa, 2 in Kiambu while Kakamega, Kilifi, Machakos, Murang’a, Nairobi, and Nyamira registered one case each.
“Coronavirus is here with us in Kenya. I would like to add that there are a lot of skeptics, who doubt that the disease is in Kenya. The disease is spreading widely in our society,” said CS Kagwe.
CS Kagwe said the World Bank has approved $50 million to support Kenya’s war against the epidemic.
