The number of coronavirus infections in Kenya has climbed to 59 after the Health Ministry confirmed nine new cases within the past 24 hours.
Speaking to reporters at Afya House on Tuesday, Health Ministry’s Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the nine cases were recorded from 234 samples tested in the past 24 hours.
She said the ministry is tracing 59 contacts of the new patients while a total of 1,150 other contacts are presently being monitored.
“So far, total close contacts reported were 1,658 and out of this number, 508 have been discharged after completing 14-day mandatory follow-up,” she said.
Ms. Mwangangi further noted that the response to the pandemic has been boosted by the opening of Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital, which has a bed capacity of 300.
She added that the government is identifying at least 20 boarding schools in each of the 47 counties to be used as makeshift isolation units in case the situation aggravates. The ministry also plans to hire 1,000 more health workers.
Health Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth in a press briefing on Monday said the number of cases in the country could hit 10,000 by the end of April.
“We postulate that we could have 1000 cases by the first week of April, 5000 by mid-April and 10,000 by end of April,” said Amoth.
