A Kenyan woman accused of defrauding a Dutch national out of Sh2.9 million was on Friday arraigned in a Nairobi court.
Winnie Warigia Maina is said to have obtained the money from Dion William Van Aardt by pretending she could help him find a woman to carry pregnancy in an arrangement professionally referred to as surrogacy.
Appearing before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, Warigia pleaded not guilty to charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 or Sh1 million bond.
Warigia, a director at Family Fertility and Surrogacy Agency in Nairobi, allegedly committed the said offense between January 12th, 2018 and February 19th, 2019, together with others not before the court.
“Warigia allegedly obtained Ksh2.9 million from Aardt by falsely pretending that her company was in a position to provide surrogacy services to him, a fact she knew to be false,” read the charge sheet.
The matter will be mentioned on March 26th, 2020.
On her company’s website, Warigia describes herself as a four-time surrogate mother.
“Warigia’s multiple surrogacy journeys in the Kenyan context give her insight into surrogacy and its challenges and benefits,” her profile reads on the website.
The company says its aim is to “provide affordable fertility solutions to intended parents.” Kenya does not have a law to govern surrogacy arrangements.
