The Ministry of Health and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) have dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that Kenya has confirmed its first coronavirus (COVID-19) case.
Through Twitter on Saturday evening, KNH urged members of the public to ignore the rumors, terming them as false.
“The information circulating on social media that there is a confirmed case of COVID 2019 Corona Virus is not true. Members of the public are advised to ignore the false alerts,” the hospital said.
Reports shared on the internet on Saturday alleged that a Chinese national had tested positive for the deadly virus that has so far claimed the lives of at least 3,000 people, most of them in China.
The Ministry of Health also refuted the reports, saying that none of the two people who were tested on Friday were diagnosed with the virus.
“@MOH_Kenya wishes to inform the public that there is no suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in the country. Last evening, two suspect cases investigated at KNH returned negative laboratory results,” the ministry said on Twitter.
The reports emerged a day after Nigeria confirmed a case of COVID-19, the first in sub-Saharan Africa.
Nigerian authorities said the patient was a 44-year-old Italian national who arrived in Nigeria from Milan on Tuesday. The man traveled from Milan to Lagos via Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines flight.
The diagnosis was confirmed at the virology laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
