Kenyan radio presenter Mwalimu Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Muthoni, was on Friday charged with robbery with violence.
Mwalimu Rachel, who was arraigned at Kikuyu Law Courts on Friday, is accused of using violence to rob a man identified as Martin Mbugua Njeri out of Sh103,500 in property and money.
“It is alleged that on the 17th of January this year, while at Area 87 in Kinoo, Kikuyu Sub-County, you and four others not before court, robbed one Martin Mbugua Njeri of his two silver chains valued at Sh65, 000, a wristwatch valued at Sh35, 000, and Sh3, 500 in cash. You applied violence while robbing Martin of his property,” the prosecutor read the charge to Mwalimu Rachel.
Rachel, a presenter at NRG Radio, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on Sh10,000 cash bail. The matter will be mentioned on February 3rd, 2020.
The mother of one was arrested and booked at Kinoo Police Station after her victim filed a report at the police post. Mbugua accused Rachael, her boyfriend and two other “well-built” men of beating him while pulling out his dread-locks from his scalp.
Rachel allegedly accused Mbugua, who is a friend of singer Miracle Baby of convincing him to keep away from her. Rachel is the manager of the Sailors music group, in which Miracle Baby belongs.
This, Mwalimu Rachel claimed, made her lose Sh10 million in deals because of Miracle Baby’s continuous absence when the music group was needed to perform at events. The attack is alleged to have happened outside Miracle Baby’s house in Kinoo.
Rachel and her accomplices are also accused of tying Mbugua’s hands using an electrical cable and bundling him into a car’s boot. In his statement, Mbugua claimed the suspects tortured him, including squeezing his manhood.
Mwalimu Rachel stares at a death sentence if she is found guilty of the offense. Section 296 (2) of the Penal Code states: “If the offender is armed with any dangerous or offensive weapon or instrument, or is in company with one or more other person or persons, or if, at or immediately before or immediately after the time of the robbery, he wounds, beats, strikes or uses any other personal violence to any person, he shall be sentenced to death.”
