Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was on Monday re-elected unopposed as the Council of Governors (CoG) Chairman.
Oparanya took over the helm at the CoG in January 2019 from his Turkana counterpart Josephat Nanok who served from May 2017 to January 2019.
No elections were held on Monday after it emerged that Oparanya had no opponents, with Governors granting him another one-year term by consensus.
Similarly, Governor Mwangi Wa Iria (Murang’a) will serve as CoG vice-chairman for another term after his opponents Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) backed out of the race after a consensus was reached. Governor Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) retained his chief whip position unopposed.
“The white smoke came much earlier and I am here to congratulate you. The leadership of CoG is critical in the realization of big four agenda and vision 2030,” Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said.
The CoG is founded in the Intergovernmental Relations Act and consists of all the 47 elected governors. The body provides a forum for consultation among county governments and the sharing of information on the performance of the counties in the execution of their functions.
