Nairobi Hospital on the Spot as Patient Gets Stuck in the Elevator for 75 Minutes

Nairobi Hospital is on the spot over reports that the management did little to help a patient who allegedly got stuck in a lift for more than one hour.

The Ministry of Health on Sunday ordered a probe into the matter after it was reported that the patient remained in the elevator for one hour and 15 minutes. Outgoing Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said the incident happened on Sunday when the patient was being transferred on from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

“The hospital administration failed to find an immediate solution to the grave situation,” Ms. Kariuki said in a statement.

She added that the ministry had been informed that this was not the first such case at the medical facility. CS Kariuki directed the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council to immediately investigate the matter and submit a report in two days.

“The hospital management is hereby directed to ensure patients at the facility are not exposed to similar situations in future,” CS Kariuki added.

The affected patient, a 46-year-old man, was stable, Daily Nation reported.
