Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has refuted reports claiming that it is considering imposing a tax on dowry payments in a bid to boost revenue.
A section of blogs had popularized claims that the taxman was moving to tax dowry, with the rumors eliciting negative reactions from Kenyans on social media.
Via its official Twitter handle on Wednesday, KRA dismissed the claims as fake and strange, stating: “Hii story hata sisi tumeiskia tu.”
While most social media users were of the opinion that the alleged move by KRA was unwelcomed and unfair, others said it would raise the much-needed revenue.
Juma Edwin said: “But think of it as a good idea, that’s a sector you’ve always ignored. We need revenue.”
One of the local news websites had reported that the KRA board was discussing the matter and would soon announce their final decision. “The board made it clear that the talks and consultations are ongoing and that the sooner they arrived at an agreement the earlier they would make it formal,’’ the blog reported.
This is a No No go zone…
This is a No No go zone. Dowry is part of our cultures. It is not a business. It is part of our soul. In our various cultures, when we give dowry, we are not paying for anything as some may interpret, we do so to honor our ancestors, our creator and to affirm our being in the community. Africans are not just about money and riches. Our being and purpose is defined by our communities.
If the government needs more money, tax the foreign evil, greedy, holier than thou churches that are foreign in our communities. Or nationalize them.
LEAVE OUR CULTURES ALONE!!! THIS IS AN ATTACK ON OUR SOUL AND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR GOD (OUR CREATOR AND OUR ANCESTORS)
If Kenya needs cash that bad…
If Kenya needs cash that bad, let us tax any name used in Kenya that is not African.(Anyone adopting a foreign name) Also let us tax any language used in Kenya that is not African. Tax anyone putting foreign hair on their head ( hair that is not African)
Do not attempt to tax our souls!!!
Go after the Churches, they…
Go after the Churches, they correct millions of shillings for free and pay no taxes. Their life style of opulence and wastage is clear testimony of where the revenue is.
