At least 24 people have been confirmed dead after landslides hit two villages in West Pokot County on Saturday morning.
West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello said the affected villages are Nyarkulian and Parua, where the landslides buried people alive.
Okello indicated that rescue operation was being inhibited by heavy rains, adding that an unknown number of people are still feared trapped.
Sondany area Chief Joel Bulal said several other people sustained injuries and were taken to different health facilities for treatment.
“Many people have been injured while animals and houses have also been buried by the massive landslide,” said Bulal.
Authorities said heavy rains have been pounding the area in the past few days.
In a tweet, Deputy President William Ruto sent condolences to the bereaved families and urged those in vulnerable areas to be on high alert.
“Sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the West Pokot landslide. May God give you peace and comfort, and may our prayers ease the pain of this great loss,” wrote DP Ruto.
Why don’t these land slides…
Why don’t these land slides hit places like Runda and Karen, and bury these waheshimiwas that are the real enemies to Kenya.
