Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Monday released the official results of the 2019 national population census.
While releasing the 2019 census report at State House, Nairobi, KNBS director-general Zachary Mwangi said a total of 47.6 million Kenyans were enumerated during the counting exercise done in August.
Of the 47,564,296 enumerated persons, 23,548,056 (49 percent) are male, 24,014,716 (50.5 percent) female while 1,524 are intersex, according to the report.
The total population increased by 9.9 million from 37.7 million recorded in the 2009 census while the average household number declined to 3.9 in 2019 from 4.2.
“The population has grown to 47.6 million in 2019 from 37.7 million in 2009 and the intersex population has declined to 2.2% in 2019 from 2.9% in 2009,” said Mwangi while presenting the report to President Kenyatta at State House.
Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Bungoma are the five most populous counties while Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu, Tana River, and Taita Taveta are the least populated.
“I am happy to note that this is the first census to be conducted under the new Constitution and was fully funded by my government. We employed the use of the new technology and the devices used were assembled locally,” said President Kenyatta after receiving the report.
“So, therefore, we direct all ministries and departments to utilize these results, including counties and development partners,” added Kenyatta.
