A section of leaders drawn from Mt. Kenya region have vowed to defy President Kenyatta if the much anticipated Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report proposes a parliamentary system of government.
Led by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, the leaders said they will reject the report if it fails to address critical issues of representation and equal sharing of resources.
While expressing his reservations on the BBI report on Saturday, Kiunjuri said any constitutional change should be an all-inclusive process and not a scheme to secure positions for a few leaders.
“Kusiwe na watu ambao wanataka kujiangalia wenyewe, ati kama ni katiba inageuzwa inageuzwa kwasababu ya kabila fulani ama kwasababu ya watu fulani… ” said CS Kiunjuri while speaking in Laikipia.
“Hatujasema hatutaki katiba kubadilishwa lakini tunataka ichunguzwe kabisa na iwekwe sawasawa…,” added Kiunjuri.
The leaders spoke at the launch of a tree planting exercise in Laikipia County where they called for the retention of a presidential system of government.
This comes just two weeks after the BBI taskforce, which was formed in the aftermath of the handshake between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga, formally concluded its assignment seventeen months after it was created.
The team was tasked with collecting Kenyans’ views on how to solve nine key issues including ethnic antagonism, lack of national ethos, inclusivity, devolution, divisive elections, security, corruption, shared prosperity, and responsibility.
The taskforce is set to present the report to President Kenyatta.
