The government has refuted reports that the burial site of Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi has been discovered.
In a statement a day after Dedan Kimathi Foundation CEO Evelyn Wanjugu Kimathi announced that the gravesite of the Mau Mau fighter was identified at Kamiti Maximum Prison, the Interior Ministry termed the information as false.
“Our attention has been drawn to the news on some platforms that the grave of our freedom fighter Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi has been found at Kamiti Prison. Please note these claims are false and misleading,” the Interior Ministry said.
Ms. Wanjugu, who is the daughter of Kimathi, had on Friday described the site as an unmarked gravesite inside the prison.
“This development is not only just great news for the Dedan Kimathi family but also the larger freedom struggle heroes fraternity,” her statement read.
“We now wait with crossed fingers for chief justice David Maraga to allow for the exhumation of his remains for a decent burial,” she added.
Kimathi was the leader of the Mau Mau movement, which fought against British colonial rule in Kenya.
Colonialists captured him in 1956 after he was shot and wounded by home guards before a court later sentenced to death by hanging for being in possession of a firearm. He was hanged in 1957 and buried in an unknown location.
