A Kenyan teacher has won the inaugural African Union’s (AU) Continental Teacher Prize for his outstanding performance.
Erick Ademba, a teacher at Asumbi Girls Secondary School in Homa Bay County, won the prize on Wednesday alongside two other tutors.
He was feted alongside Ghanaian Augusta Lartey-Young and Gladys K. of Uganda in a ceremony held at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Each of the three received a certificate and 10,000 US dollars in prize money.
They were awarded for their efforts in quality teaching; encouraging desirable behaviors; engaging in activities and networks that enhance the social and cultural value of learning and helping students achieve their long-term career goals.
In March this year, 36-year-old Kenyan teacher Peter Tabichi won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize, becoming the first teacher from Africa to win the prestigious award.
The Mathematics and Science teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Nakuru County won the Varkey Foundation $1 million Global Teacher Prize in a ceremony held in Dubai.
Tabichi is a member of the Franciscan religious order, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in the early 13th century by St. Francis of Assisi.
This is very good news…
This is very good news following the shameful scandals of teachers impregnating students .and taking bribes from parents.
I believe that there are many Adembas, and Tabichi amongst our teachers, and we should find away to harvest more of them, and find away to discourage those other scandalous ones.
