Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Gichugu MP Martha Karua are among lawyers whose names are set to be presented to President Kenyatta for promotion.
Musyoka and Karua are among 24 top lawyers who were selected by a committee for conferment of the rank of senior counsel.
Their listing means they are an inch closer to joining the elite and exclusive club of senior counsels whose membership include, among others, lawyers James Orengo, Prof. Tom Ojienda, Paul Muite, Prof. Githu Muigai, and Dr. Willy Mutunga.
The 24 names were picked from a pool of 90 applicants and will be forwarded to Chief Justice David Maraga who will then present them to President Kenyatta for gazettement.
Other lawyers in the list include Philip Murgor, Fred Ngatia, Dorcas Oduor (Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions), Judy Thongori (renowned family lawyer), and Kioko Kilikumi.
Also in the list are lawyers Patricia Nyaundi, John Ohaga, Rautta Athiambo, Wilfred Nderitu, Prof Albert Mumma, Pravin Bowry, and John Chigiti.
“The committee at its meeting held on August 26, 2019, considered your application. We are pleased to inform you that your application was successful,” part of the letter sent to successful applicants reads.
The shortlisting was done by the Senior Counsel Committee whose members include Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, Justice Martha Koome, Justice Jacqueline Kamau, Omesh Kapila, and Patricia Kameri-Mbote.
Other members of the committee are Lucy Kambuni, Lillian Renee-Omondi, Nicholus Bichanga, LSK president Allen Gichuhi, and Attorney-General Paul Kihara.
