Sh72 Million Nairobi Heist: 60-Year-Old Woman, Grandson Arrested with Sh2.3 Million

A 60-year-old woman and her grandson have been arrested in connection with Sh72 million heist that happened in Nairobi on September 5th.

John Kamau Mulei was arrested at Muumaandu, Machakos County by detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) acting on a tip-off.

DCI said Mulei led officers to the house of his grandmother Mary Kyalo at Kalumoni, Machakos County where Sh2.389 million was recovered. The money recovered was in denominations of new Sh1,000 Kenyan banknotes.

Police indicated that Mulei is the brother to Bernard Mwendwa, a G4S officer who was arrested after the heist on allegations of being part of the gang that organized the robbery.

Criminals posing as police officers on escort robbed G4S personnel of Sh72 million that was being transported to different bank ATMs in the city.

The G4S team had collected the cash from the security company’s headquarters on Witu Road with three men who posed as police officers.

When they arrived at Standard Chartered Bank ATM in Nairobi West to reload cash into the machine, the criminals turned on them and transferred Sh72 million into another vehicle before escaping.

Six suspects, including three police officers, were arrested and arraigned in court last week where they were freed on Sh1 million bond.

The six are Chris Mochogu, Dancun Luvuka, Vincent Owuor, Boniface Mutua, Alexender Mutuku and Francis Muriuki.
