A foreigner who traveled to Kenya early this month to tie the knot with his Kenyan girlfriend found himself in trouble after he was accused of sexual defilement.
Buberry Bonnie Newman, a Zimbabwean national, arrived in Kenya on September 4th to finalize paperwork that would pave the way for his wedding with Susan Bwan, a Kenyan woman he met on an online dating site five years ago.
The following day, after spending the night at Bwan’s house, Newman was arrested over allegations of sexual defilement, Daily Nation reported.
After dating online for a couple of years, they met in December 2018 for the first time and agreed to make their relationship official.
51-year-old Newman traveled to Kenya from the United Kingdom, where he lives and works as an electrical engineer. He is also a UK citizen. His plan was to marry Bwan and fly back to the UK with her.
He landed at Moi International Airport in Mombasa on September 4th and was received by his fiancée and some kids belonging to Bwan’s neighbor.
“The reception at the airport was warm,” he said.“One of the minors gave me a long, firm hug, and we later proceeded to my fiancée’s house near Mtwapa.”
When they arrived at Bwan’s one-bedroom house in Mtwapa, Newman took a shower before retiring to bed. Although he had been told the kids would go back to their homes, the children spent the night at Bwan’s house.
He woke up the next morning and took breakfast before his fiancée accompanied him to look for a venue for their wedding.
“After we were through with the day’s program, we went to a supermarket and did some shopping. We loaded the car and returned home,” Newman narrated.
Things, however, took a new turn after a group of police officers surrounded his vehicle moments after they returned at Bwan’s house.
He was apprehended and driven to Mtwapa police station where he was told a mother to one of the minors that spent the night at Bwan’s house reported that her daughter was raped.
“I had no option but (to accompany them). At the police station, I was told that a woman had reported that I had been defiling minors in my girlfriend’s house,” he explained.
Appearing before Shanzu senior resident magistrate David Odhiambo, Newman said police confiscated his passport, mobile phones, and other items before locking him in cells.
“I did not sleep close to any of the girls I am alleged to have defiled. I don’t know why the woman made such a complaint about me. I don’t know her in person. I am not aware if she has personal differences with my girlfriend,” he told the court.
After investigations, police established that the complainant identified as Ms. Mutaiwua lied to fix the foreigner and rip him off. Newman was released after this discovery.
Ms. Mutaiwua was arrested and charged with false information maliciously made with the intent to disadvantage the foreigner.
Police said they suspected the woman was using the minor to extort cash from wealthy foreigners. Ms. Mutaiwua and her daughter are also witnesses in another case where Elsek Osman, a Turkish tycoon, is accused of defiling a minor and committing indecent acts with three others.
Newman has since canceled the wedding.
While applauding the work…
While applauding the work police did on this’s case, I would like to point out that, some of the tourists in mombasa do defile minors, but some parents are to blame because they find this as a quick way of minting cash.
Some of the parents are on drugs.
We need a special unit to deal with this, because we are destroying a lot of our children.
Another problem is our mentality and fear of any white person out. Also corruption plays a big role on who gets prosecuted.
