Indian Hospital Detains Kenyan Woman, Son over Sh1 Million Medical Bill

A Kenyan woman and her one-year-old son are currently detained at an Indian hospital after she failed to settle a medical bill amounting to Sh1 million.

Lydia Achieng from Homa Bay County took her son to MIOT Center for Children’s Cardiac Care in India, where the boy underwent specialized surgery. The minor reportedly underwent an operation to fill a hole in his heart.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Wednesday, Achieng’s husband Pacifica Onyango said the operation was fully sponsored by a non-governmental organization (NGO) known as HAWI.

However, a few days after the boy underwent surgery, the organization informed the family that it could not settle the hospital bill as earlier promised.

Onyango, a social worker in Muhuru town, fears that his wife and son will remain at the hospital for long if he does not get help to settle the amount, which has been growing by the day.

He said he has been sending his wife the little he gets for daily upkeep. Onyango appealed to well-wishers to help him raise the cash and have his family fly back to Kenya.
