A 50-year-old Spanish woman who was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday for being in possession of ivory bangle was fined Sh1 million.
Pich-Aguilera Maria was traveling from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania when she was apprehended with the jewelry weighing 0.025 grams.
Appearing before JKIA Law Courts, Ms. Maria pleaded guilty to charges of being in possession of a bracelet made of ivory and was fined Sh1 million or a 12-month jail sentence in default.
In a statement, Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) said the foreigner was released after paying the fine and was allowed to proceed with her journey to Tanzania.
“Maria paid Sh1 million fine and proceeded with her journey to Dar es Salaam. She had pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal possession of ivory and was fined Sh1 million or 12 months imprisonment in default,” KWS said.
On Thursday last week, the same court slapped a Frenchwoman with a fine of Sh1 million after she also pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal possession of ivory.
Ms. Laazibi Amal was arrested at JKIA with ivory bracelet weighing 0.85 grams. She was transiting through the Nairobi airport from France to Dzaoudzi Island.
