President Kenyatta has led the nation in paying tribute to the late Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso.
Laboso, 58, succumbed to cancer while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital at around 3 pm on Monday.
In his message of condolence to family and friends, President Uhuru mourned Dr. Laboso as an icon of women leadership adding that she will be remembered for her passion for education, especially for the girl-child.
“I have received the sad news of the passing away of Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso with utter disbelief. Dr. Laboso was an icon of women leadership in our country. May God grant the family, residents of Bomet and all Kenyans the fortitude to bear the big loss,” said Kenyatta.
“The cruel hand of death has robbed our nation of a bold and illustrious leader who loved and served her country with distinction.”
On his part, Deputy President William Ruto described Laboso as a courageous, hardworking, and a very progressive woman leader.
“Joyce Laboso exemplified the strength of a woman: gentle yet firm, intense, hardworking, resilient and pragmatic. She was an iconic leader, who focused and delivered on her constituents’ interests. Joyce has left us a very devastated nation, county, and family,” said Ruto.
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga said: “Laboso’s death is a blow to our system of devolved government. She was a dedicated public servant and when I recently visited her in hospital in London, I was encouraged that she was on the path to full recovery. My prayers are with her family and the people of Bomet. Rest in Peace.”
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi wrote: “At the Assembly, Dr. Laboso will be remembered as a humble, amiable & diligent lawmaker who made an immense contribution as the Head of the Kenyan Delegation to the African Caribbean and Pacific- European Union General Assembly, towards the pact on the Economic Partnership Agreement.”
Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka said: “Deeply saddened by the news of Governor Dr Joyce Laboso’s passing. Joyce boldly shattered glass ceilings by being the first female Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and thereafter one of three female Governors. Her rich legacy speaks to her determination, intellect & drive.”
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko tweeted: “Governor Laboso will forever be remembered as hardworking and determined public servant who dedicated her time to the service of the Kenyan people and Bomet residents. At this moment of great national grief, my prayers are with her family. May her soul Rest in Peace.”
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru posted: “It is with profound sorrow that I mourn the demise of my dear friend and colleague Governor, H.E. Joyce Laboso. I will miss her warmth, laughter, friendship, and steadfast support. She was a phenomenal woman. R.I.P my sister.”
RIP Joyce.
In her…
RIP Joyce.
In her remembrance, let our leaders act. Create one of the best hospitals in any part of Kenya ( probably her home town) and a research center to make sure non of our leaders seek help without. That will not only help our leaders but also locals who cannot afford air-fares or treatment outside the country.
Our leaders will have pride in our country and not give us shame running away from the country they lead at the time of need.
