Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was on Sunday arrested hours after detectives said they could not trace him in his homes in Kiambu and Nairobi.
Waititu was apprehended shortly after presenting himself at Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters at Integrity Centre in Nairobi on Sunday morning.
Governor Waititu was missing since Friday evening when Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered for his arrest over alleged embezzlement of Sh588 million public funds.
Haji said he was satisfied with evidence linking Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari Ndung’u and 11 other suspects to irregular procurement for upgrading several roads in Kiambu County.
Speaking to K24 Digital after arriving at EACC offices, Waititu’s lawyer Kipchumba Karori said his client did not surrender to police on Saturday as he was out of town. The whereabouts of Waititu’s wife Susan and nine other suspects remain unknown.
Governor Waititu and his co-accused will be charged with conflict of interest, dealing with suspect property, abuse of office, willful failure to comply with the law relating to procurement and engaging in fraudulent practice among others.
