Suspected Mentally Ill Kenyan Man Arrested with Sh275,000, Banned Plastic Bags

An alleged mentally ill Kenyan man has been arrested with Sh275,000 in cash and 1,500 pieces of banned plastic bags.

The middle-aged man was arrested on Friday morning in Kimilili, Bungoma County.

The suspect was nabbed during a crackdown on people still using banned polythene carrier bags in the area.

The operation was carried out by officers from the National Environment Management Agency (Nema) in collaboration with the police.

Kimilili Sub-County Deputy Commissioner Joyce Onguso said the suspect will be taken to court once officers finalize investigations into the incident.

Onguso said officers are trying to establish how the suspected mentally ill man acquired the money and plastic carrier bags.

Bungoma lead environment officer Rob Kipkoech said the plastic bags are sneaked into the country from neighboring Uganda.

Kenya banned plastic bags on February 28th, 2017 to curb environmental pollution.

The suspect is being held at a Bungoma police post.

  1. Give the guy his money back!…
Give the guy his money back! If no one has accused him of stealing then what’s the legal rationale as to why you are holding him money? Politician’s are loathing billions and non has ever been held accountable. If he’s mentally ill he ought to be in hospital and not court, as mentally ill may not understand that the plastics are banned! Can a pro bono lawyer help save this guy and his money? it will end up in other people’s pockets.
