Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and his sister Dr. Risper Nyagoy have been fined Sh400,000 each or face a one-month jail term.
The two were found guilty of contempt of court in a family row for Sh200 million estate left behind by their father Hesbon Shimei Nyong’o, who died on November 2006 without leaving a will.
Kisumu High Court judge Thrispisa Cherere ordered the two to pay the fine within 30 days.
“They will pay another 50,000 each monthly should they fail to honor the court orders after the expiry of the 30-days fine,” the judge said.
The judge read their sentence on Thursday after they skipped a second court date.
Justice Cherere said she was not convinced by their lawyer’s claim that they could not attend the court on Thursday because of the death of their mother on Monday.
Governor Nyong’o and Nyagoy were found guilty of contempt after they failed to comply with court orders that had directed them to include two of their nephews; Geoffrey Omondi and Kennedy Odhiambo as beneficiaries of their father’s vast estate.
