Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli has clarified his remarks about Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
Speaking last week, Atwoli said that Ruto’s name will not be on the ballot for 2022 presidential elections, sentiments that were not taken lightly by the Deputy President’s allies.
“In 2022 we shall elect the president in an election that will be very peaceful since we shall have amended the Constitution,” said Atwoli.
He added: “The name of William Samoei Ruto will not be there (on the ballot)… You can take it to the bank.”
Led by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, leaders allied to Ruto accused Atwoli of a plot to assassinate the DP to stop him from ascending to power.
However, Atwoli has refuted claims that he wished Ruto death, stating that he meant that the DP will not be part of the next government.
“While I was in Lamu, I did not say that Ruto will die, no, but I said the referendum is coming and that there will be six slots, but Ruto’s name will not be there (on the ballot),” says Atwoli.
Ruto allies have asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to probe the trade unionist’s remarks warning that Atwoli will be answerable should anything happen to him.
