President Uhuru Kenyatta is on Thursday set to deliver this year’s State of the Nation Address at Parliament.
Kenyatta will deliver the address before a joint sitting of the National Assembly and Senate at the main chambers.
Article 132 (1) of the Constitution mandates the President to address a special sitting of Parliament once every year.
It also mandates him to file a report on the “measures taken and progress achieved in the realization of national values.”
The President is also required to table a report to the National Assembly on the country’s progress in meeting its international obligations.
The renewed fight against corruption, which has been touted as a key legacy agenda for President Kenyatta’s second and final term in office, is expected to dominate his speech.
His commitment to fighting the vice saw him appoint new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti.
Kinoti and Haji have been hailed for taking the war against graft a notch higher.
The two have managed to arrest and charge some top-ranking government officials including Governors, MPs, head of parastatals, judicial officers and Cabinet members accused of engaging in corruption.
Kenyatta’s address is also expected to focus on the progress of the implementation of his Big Four Action Plan.
Under the plan, Kenyatta is seeking to deliver on four key areas including food security, affordable housing, manufacturing, and universal healthcare.
He is also expected to give highlights on the state of the economy, devolution, and national unity.
