Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has promised to reconcile Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
Sonko says he will mediate talks between the two leaders in a bid to end the ongoing political feud.
Speaking during a funeral ceremony in Makueni County, Sonko says the bitter exchange of words between Odinga and Ruto is raising tensions in the country and risks igniting violence.
“Mimi nashirikiana na wazee wa kanisa huko Nairobi, nitahakikisha Raila Odinga na William Ruto pia watakua na handshake yao… (I am working together with church elders in Nairobi and I will ensure Raila Odinga and William Ruto also have a handshake),” says Sonko.
Odinga and Ruto have exchanged barbs in recent weeks over the war against corruption and 2022 succession politics.
Sonko has also urged leaders to refrain from 2022 politics and focus on delivering services to Kenyans.
“Let us stop focusing on 2022 politics and instead have a handshake lineup, I know if Raila and Deputy President William Ruto have a handshake, peace in Kenya will last for many years,” Sonko notes.
