Kenyan Members of Parliament are pushing for an accommodation allowance for the days they are required to attend House sittings.
The National Assembly Committee on Members’ Services and Facilities has tabled a report seeking the implementation of the allowance.
The proposal was made after a benchmarking tour in New Zealand where the committee learned that the country’s MPs enjoy an allowance of about Sh400,000 ($4,000) every time they travel to the capital for sittings.
“The committee also observed that during the financial year 2018/2019, among other programmes, the commission budgeted for facilitation of members of Parliament accommodation when they come to Nairobi to discharge their legislative work,” part of the report reads.
“The committee observed that the said budget may not have been expended and was therefore interested in knowing the status of implementation of the specific allocation,” it adds.
The report further notes that the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) has been slow in implementing the proposal and wants a law to be made to compel it to act.
“The committee is, therefore, concerned and wishes to invoke the provisions of Article 254 (2) of the Constitution and recommend to the National Assembly to require the commission to report on the implementation of the matters contained in the second report of the committee adopted on August 15th, 2018,” the report says.
Parliament normally sits every Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with committee sittings held on Mondays.
If implemented, the MPs will enjoy staying in five-star hotels in the city during the sitting days as recommended in the report.
Perhaps in 5 Star hotels…
Perhaps in 5 Star hotels with their sidekicks at our expense. This is when Kenyans in Baringo and Turkana are dying of hunger. These guys have no shame! They only think through their stomaches. Let’s give them the allowances them go to China to get development loans and to the whole world to ask for hunger relief. There used to be voices who advocated for the exploited and oppressed. Where is it now? If the church keeps quiet, if other bodies did quiet too, we them become accomplices to the insatiable desires of our leaders. Gay! Gay! Gay! That’s only what we shout about. When it comes to justice for the little man, we turn the other way. But it’s understandable, they have no money to tithe and no money for harambees. Kenya is being raped by the same people entrusted with its safety.
very true and thanks for…
very true and thanks for being so eloquent about the whole thing, I think we need to start looking, initially at peaceful means to stop this madness by possibly suing these pigs in ICC or some other credible body, we have multiple unresolved scandals clearly showing the government is incapable of resolving this issue and also the corrupt nature of Kenyan courts….can individual private citizen sue the government for mismanagement of her/his money? When you pay taxes you should expect medicine in hospitals, good schools and quality public services which is dfntly not the case with Kenya
Why was the benchmaking tour…
Why was the benchmaking tour in Newzealand, acountry with GDP of 2.5 times that of Kenya with apopulation of 5million people?
Why didnt they go to Nigerian which now has the largest economy in Africa?Or for that matter go to a country with comparable economies.
I actually have no problem with Mpigs getting what they want so long as wananchi also gets what he wants.Since they are supposed to serve us, they should make sure we are satisfied. And we are not.Especially when 20 of their comrades are implicated if fake money fraud/scandal,this is not the right time to talk about spending more public funds, for little or no gain.
In New zealand they DON’T…
In New zealand they DON’T steal Mwanainchi Taxes like you people do in Kenya and they produce real results in their work as opposed to your lazy thiefing habits. DO YOUR OWN INVENTIONS AND CEASE AND DESIST FROM BEING COPY CATS.
