The Parliamentary Committee on Appointments has approved the nomination of Prof. George Magoha as Education Cabinet Secretary.
In a report tabled before the House, the committee says Magoha’s nomination complies with the Public Appointments Act.
The Speaker Justin Muturi-led committee also says it was satisfied by his academic credentials, experience as well as professional training.
The team also mentions that he was cleared by various government agencies including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
The committee further states that the 67-year-old professor also demonstrated integrity during his vetting and no one submitted a memorandum challenging his nomination.
“The nominee has not been dismissed or otherwise removed from office for contravening the provisions of Article 75 of the Constitution.”
“He has also not been adversely associated with practices that depict bias, favoritism or nepotism in the discharge of public duties. He has fully complied with the tax obligations to the State for the financial year immediately preceding his nomination for the appointment.”
“He has not been charged in a court of law in the past three years or been adversely mentioned in an investigatory report of Parliament or any other Commission of inquiry in the last three years,” the report reads.
The committee says it established Magoha is fit to lead the ministry, having held various administrative positions in the public service in the past.
He was nominated to the position by President Kenyatta on March 1st, 2019, and vetted by the parliamentary committee on Thursday, March 14th, 2019.
During his vetting, Magoha revealed he is worth Sh250 million. The House is expected to debate the report on Wednesday.
