A 24-year-old Kenyan has been charged with electronic theft of more than Sh294 million from a local bank.
Kevin Kunga Mwaka is accused of fraudulently interfering with data in the Family Bank banking system by altering 22 prepaid card balances involving Sh294.8 million.
“Fraudulently and with intent to steal, the accused altered data in Family bank of Kenya’s core banking system by altering 22 pre-paid card balances involving a total amount of Sh294,800,003,” the charge sheet reads.
He is alleged to have committed the offenses between November 1st, 2018, and January 20th, 2019.
Appearing before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku, Kunga has also been charged with conspiracy to steal Sh294,800,003 from Family bank on the same dates.
The charge sheet also shows that the accused dishonestly received in his Family Bank account Sh15 million on January 19th knowing well that it was stolen money.
Kunga pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him and has been released on Sh2 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail.
How come these banks don’t…
How come these banks don’t have better security in their computer systems. It is far too easy for these conmen to manipulate the system. Far too easy.
@Godhavemercy, that is what…
@Godhavemercy, that is what I was about to say. If they cannot be able to provide excellent network security then they should go back to the old system. Bure kabisa.
Nowadays its complicated…
Nowadays its complicated hackers dig out weaknesses in web applications to login the system and use administrative privileges to do sort of operations. Although hacking Network systems is less complex initially.

I sure the national corruptions rate and
judicial circus are conducive to this and many on-going menaces.
Good luck wanachini!
@Mbwana, how comes banks in…
@Mbwana, how comes banks in USA are not hacked like banks in Kenya. It is because banks in USA invest so much in security of their systems. To my guess in Kenya hackers are helped by the employees of the banks. USA tellers are paid almost minimum wages but they do not steal.
Hey sorry I just saw this…
Hey sorry I just saw this. The answer is yes, every USA organisation is individually responsible to secure they clients. Otherwise there would face irregularities fines, classic law suits from customers and damage to reputations. Those and business competition (including attacking another for business info) will make an organization to hire educated and or experienced cyber security staff.
So in Africa we’re still get there as more people will be educated and use technology as we go.

This shows that no one…
This shows that no one sector is immune or safe from this scourge of theft public or private. Its a problem of cyber security, young folks equipped with technology and hacking skills, lax laws on financial industry, a brigade of corrupt leaders and state officials, banks rolling out online/electronic services in haste without securing the systems, and of course inside jobs by thieves in the name of employees/bankers. Corruption should be declared a national disaster for 2 year period to give traction on the efforts by EAcc, DPp, DCI and kenyans of goodwill.
