Police in Nairobi have gunned down five suspected criminals in a botched robbery incident at Allsops, along Thika Road.
The five suspects were shot dead on Tuesday night while attempting to rob a woman of her bag that contained money.
A witness says police officers who were on patrol spotted the drama and rushed to the rescue of the businesswoman.
The woman reportedly operates an Mpesa shop near Drive Inn area and was waiting to board a bus to her residence when the gang riding on motorbikes arrived.
The Head of Special Crimes Prevention Unit Pius Gitari says a Browning pistol was recovered from the criminals.
“We will establish whose weapon it is and if it has been used in any crime,” says Gitari.
The bodies of the five have been moved to the mortuary as police officers launch investigations into the gang’s operations.
One of the suspects is believed to be behind a series of robbery incidents in Kiambu and Nairobi Counties.
The incident comes barely weeks after police officers shot dead eight suspected gangsters as they attempted to steal items from a warehouse in Industrial Area, Nairobi.
