The Commission of University Education (CUE) has rejected several ‘useless’ courses offered in various Kenyan universities.
The Commission has disapproved 133 programs that are currently being offered in different institutions of higher learning in the country, The Standard reports.
The 133 courses offered in more than 10 Kenyan private and public universities have a combined enrollment of 10,000 students, the Commission says.
Students who have already enrolled in the courses may discontinue while thousands of others who have graduated risk being locked out of the job market.
The Commission says that Tom Mboya University College has the highest number of these courses (25) followed by Garissa University and Alupe University, with 10 each.
Great Lakes University of Kisumu and Kenya Highlands Evangelical University have eight rejected programs each while Lukenya and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology have six each.
The body has also declined to approve four courses offered at Kenyatta University and Karatina University, while Moi University has three unapproved programs.
Most of the University Vice Chancellors interviewed by The Standard accused CUE of being insensitive since most of the rejected courses are already being taught.
CUE Chief Executive Prof. Mwenda Ntarangwi says the body is still engaging the affected universities for a way forward.
“This is still an ongoing process and we are in consultation with Universities,” Mwenda states.
The findings have been revealed after CUE carried out an audit of all courses offered in the universities ahead of 2019 placement.
The courses were found not to meet the required standards as per the Commission’s guidelines.
They need to publish those…
They need to publish those courses in all the major newspapers because they are scams.
You got it.?
You got it.?
Does anyone have a list of…
Does anyone have a list of said “useless courses”?

What kind of reporting is…
What kind of reporting is this? There are 10,000 victims of useless courses being offered and more victims out there who have competed those useless courses.
Where is the list? Are you a collaborator? If there are victims, there are also beneficiaries. We need full disclosure. Who is offering those courses? Whom to avoid. Who approved them? This sounds and smells like corruption? Is It? “Any education that does not take into consideration the inseparable unity between the African lineage and African thinking is based on false principles and must lead to alienation of the individual from his own self, his principles and his past”
We need more information to protect the citizenry!!!
And which courses are those?

This is nothing new, it…
This is nothing new, it happens in the West as well. We call them Mickey mouse degrees! I don’t understand why people don’t research a course and it’s marketability before embarking on one. There are millions of “graduates” roaming around jobless as a result of this mindless endeavour. RESEARCH before taking the plunge!!!
You should do your research…
You should do your research as well and realize that in the west it only happens in the unaccredited colleges and not recognized institutions. The matter about researching on the marketability of courses, its not the kids fault that they chose those specific courses. There are many factors to consider whilst applying for courses, for example the grade one got,the cut off points etc not only research is applicable in the application process. Dont be naive, its the work of all education stakeholders including the GOK to inform and advise those innocent kids the marketable and useful courses. You shouldnt show your naivety simply coz may be you were lucky to secure a job immediately after campus, that doesnt mean that you are better than or rather intelligent than those who dont.
It is very painful to say…
It is very painful to say that some courses are USELESS, there are some needy students who were admitted by KUPPS to do this courses.where do u want them to go and maybe there parents may not be able to take them to tertiary courses. If the government is sponsoring bright student y are u admitting them with courses that cannot help them.the one scrapping the courses should know that there are some needy students somewhere who may not have alternatives and there parents have used everything to sponsor them.the kuupps should stop admitting student with courses that cannot help them
wow!That is not good.
To…
wow!That is not good.
To everyone calling for integrating of Daadab refugees to Garissa county:
Garissa county is KANU.
Gideon Moi, KANU and Duale will not accept to integrate the Daadab refugees.
Gideon Moi is always in America begging for money for starving Baringo residents and for starving Daadab residents.
Therefore, it is not in his best interest to end starvation in Baringo and Daadab.
The KANU Jogoo must be slaughtered once and for all so that residents of Baringo county can be food secure and Daadab refugees can be integrated into Garissa county.
Just my two cents.
how is that related to the…
how is that related to the above issue?

Can somebody explain how…
Can somebody explain how these courses are useless because most of them have been taught for more than 100 years? Are they unaccredited courses?
Which are those offered at…
Which are those offered at the cooperative university of kenya
What right does this body…
What right does this body have to label these courses useless?? If I want to study the behavior of a beetle for four years, and be an expert on beetles, that’s up to me. Education should be about much more than preparing oneself to work for other people.

Also does that mean that DP Ruto’s B.Sc. in Zoology and Botany is fake too lo?
why don’t the government…
why don’t the government just print those useless courses in each university so that all kenyan may be informed rather than just saying that this university has this number of fake courses
What of if you were selected…

What kind of reporting is…
What kind of reporting is this? You mean “USELESS” programs? Even though you have quoted it but it give expression that indeed the programs are useless, there is no useless or “useless” program. CUE don’t approve on their usefulness but when the said programs in those respective universities meet the standard requirements set by CUE. CUE is a regulating body, making sure for example that there are enough faculties, lecture halls, facilities and the programs’ curriculums are well laid down by those respective universities etc ,they also charge universities for those programs. So it’s irrational for business people to call programs “useless”. That term is only being used by business people. The role of the universities is to provide knowledge and professionalism not skills and by that any program at the universities should lead to the two main purposes. Skills are obtained in technical institute.
