A political showdown is looming in Ukambani region after Governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) ganged up against Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The three Governors, who accuse Musyoka of poor leadership, have formed the People’s Empowerment Movement. Mutua, Ngilu and Kibwana say the movement’s main agenda is to fight poverty, generate wealth and provide leadership in Ukambani region.
The three have announced formation of the outfit following a series of strategy meetings to define development agenda for their people.
“Our people have suffered for a long time due to poor leadership. We have to provide leadership that changes the lives of our mothers, youth and men,” says Governor Ngilu.
“In February we will convene a forum where we shall announce to our people how the people’s empowerment movement will work and benefit them,” says Governor Mutua.
“All these things are being done to avoid a past of poverty of leadership,” says Governor Kibwana.
The three also say the region needs to be mobilized for national matters including the forthcoming census, President Uhuru’s Big Four Agenda programs as well as a referendum.
“We have to change our past of poverty of leadership. Our Meeting focuses on strategies of moving our people from poverty to prosperity,” says Mutua.
“We need to move our people from hopelessness to hope as we galvanize our shared resources. In 10 or 20 years’ time we do not want to be blamed for being sycophants and doing nothing. The time for change is here for the sake of our people.”
However, leaders allied to Musyoka led by former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama have dismissed the three Governors as nobodies.
“They claim they want to be president. Who cursed these people? Who told Kivutha Kibwana, Alfred Mutua and Ngilu that becoming the president is about popularity in Makueni, Kitui or Machakos.”
“If they believe they can vie for president I want to dare Kivutha to hold a rally at Tonoka grounds in Mombasa… If a thousand people attend that rally I will tell Kalonzo to retire. Let Mutua go to Maasai land and call for a rally. If 500 people show up, I will tell Kalonzo to let him be the leader,” says Muthama.
