Governor Mike Sonko to Nominate New Nairobi Deputy Governor

Governor Mike Sonko says he will nominate a candidate for the Nairobi Deputy Governor seat on Friday.

Speaking to a local TV station in Mombasa on Wednesday, Sonko has announced he will also unveil a new full Cabinet on the same day.

“Tukirudi Nairobi, nakuja na full cabinet nakuja na Deputy Governor…” (When I return to Nairobi, I will come with the full cabinet and a deputy governor)” Sonko says.

The Nairobi Deputy Governor seat fell vacant after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe on January 31st, 2018. Igathe cited frosted relationship with Sonko as the reason for his exit.

“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1 pm on 31st Jan 2018.”

“I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county. Without fear, favor or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians and my family. Thank you for the encouraging support given to me so far,” Igathe announced in a tweet.

In May, Sonko nominated deported lawyer Miguna Miguna to the position, but the Nairobi County Assembly rejected the appointment citing his unresolved citizenship status.

In October 2018, Sonko announced he has settled on either Jane Weru and Karen Nyamu to fill the position.

Ms. Nyamu is a lawyer by profession while Ms. Weru is the executive director of Akiba Mashinani Trust, an NGO that deals with housing development & finance.

  1. Sonko, no one wants to work…
Sonko, no one wants to work with you & your micro managing eagle eyed style! Didn’t you offer the post to Miguna the last I heard of this? I maintain you have more than you can chew…you are just not cut out for this. Admit and bow out bro! I will wait with baited breath for your misguided victim to be named, poor soul, whoever they are are!

  2. If Nairobi is still running…
If Nairobi is still running with almost no cabinet and no deputy, that may mean these positions are redundant. These bloated county and national cabinets should be trimmed to a more efficient size. For now the bigger the government the greater the liability and the wage bill. So, by default Nairobi is proving that counties can run without that many officers. Better still revert Nairobi to national government.

@Mlevi, I am an objective, eclectic being. I am never for one set in stone but swayed by evidence. Deliver or out. He has not. FACT.

  4. @Sober, I am sorry, “mlevi”…
@Sober, I am sorry, “mlevi” was a typo, the same as I assumed “Subari” was a typo as in Sukari? I felt the kivuli as far off as Nairobi. If so, I am the queen of Kivuli and there is nothing I love better in the right setting. Get the drift? Let’s go!
