Kenyan University Student Killed by a Matatu Two Days after Cheating Death in another Road Accident on Boxing Day

A 21-year-old Kenyan woman has been killed in a road accident just two days after she cheated death in another accident involving a motorcycle and a public service vehicle.

On Boxing Day, Maximilian Chemutai escaped with minor injuries after the motorbike she was traveling in collided with a matatu at Chebarus area in Nandi County. She was returning home from a local shopping center when the accident happened.

“God, you are so amazing. I will forever glorify and praise your name. I was involved in an accident. It was God’s favor to escape without any serious injuries,” she said in a Facebook post after the accident.

She ended her post by wishing her friends “a happy and prosperous New Year”, written in bold letters. Her friends poured goodwill messages on her post.

However, on Saturday afternoon, Chemutai left home to meet the boda-boda rider who was carrying her during the accident to “sort out the matter” since the incident had been recorded with the police at Chebarus.

Sadly, the mother of three was hit by a matatu while standing by the roadside at the same shopping center. She died on the spot.

Eyewitnesses say the PSV vehicle lost control and ploughed into a crowd that was standing by the roadside, leaving six people, including Chemutai dead. She was a student at Kisii University’s Eldoret campus studying mass communication.

“I can’t understand what happened. She was recovering well from the knock. It is so confusing,” her mother Beatrice Chebet says.

Her elder brother Geoffrey Kipkoech says he was accompanying her during the accident and escaped death by a whisker.

“I had just joined her on the roadside when a matatu sped towards where we were standing. I managed to dash but she was not lucky,” Kipkoech narrates.

This is so sad, it’s hard even to comprehend! I can just imagine how the family members feel. I pray for strength for the family members of those involved in the accident.

@ Mucang’ang’a, my interpretation of what Imara is saying is that, if God spared her at the motocycle accident, why did he not save her from being hit by the matatu, just like he had save her earlier?
Yes its sad, unfortunate, and it does not have anything to do with God.It,just an accident. These things happen through human error,or some unknown reasons”act of God”.Ihave not problem if people feel good when they think that a higher power is there to guide them, but to me that’s just it.FEEL GOOD.It makes people feel protected by something mighty, and all powerful. But is also make them avoid the hard questions.Like why he did not intervene and save this young lady?
Some will say that God wanted her,and that it was her time to go.Really?

Rest in peace girl. Your days had just came to an end. May God comfort the family you’ve left behind and give them strength

    Ndugu @Mucang’ang’a:

Ajali haina kinga.

Maombi Hayasaidii kitu chochote.

  8. If the stupid Moroni driver…
If the stupid Moroni driver was competent she would still be alive. The problems with most matatu drivers and touts in Kenya, thinkbthey know it all, they are arrogant, many are drunks, they have no regards for safety nor traffic rules,it is a trend in have notice with many matatu drivers, then wait they see another matatu from another Sacco it will be a stupid racing to outdo the other, very foolish and juveline. The govt and esp NTSa and Matiangi must not have mercy with such drivers. They don’t have to be on the road, Their other jobs they can do without committing mass murder through reckless driving.
