The government is set to spend about Sh1.2 billion to upgrade and rehabilitate 600 kilometers of roads in Nairobi.
The project will be undertaken jointly by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (Kerra).
Kura has allocated Sh1.29 billion for upgrade 588.60 kilometers of road in the Kenyan capital while Kerra has set aside Sh164 million for the upgrade of 21.2 kilometers.
Under the programme, Jogoo and Lusaka roads will be upgraded at a cost Sh10.34 million while Landhies Road will get Sh3.8 million.
Sh42 million will be used for the upgrade of the northern and eastern bypasses while Spine, Manyanja, Bogani East, Baba Dogo, Peponi, Joseph Kang’ethe, Utawala and Kasarani-Mwiki roads will also be upgraded.
At least 18 major roads, 29 streets and five lanes will be upgraded in the city center. Dubois, Tsavo, Temple, Haile Selassie, Lagos, Taveta, Ronald Ngala, Monrovia, Wabera, Mfangano, Loita, Tom Mboya, Kimathi, Luthuli and Fire Station are among roads, streets, and lanes set for the upgrade.
Kenya Roads Board (KRB) Executive Director Jacob Ruwa says the Nairobi County government will contribute 15 percent of the funds required for the programme.
Earlier this year, Governor Mike Sonko said that 58 roads and lanes in the city center were in bad shape are needed quick fixing.
Three Chinese firms namely; China Wu Yi, Sinohydro Corporation and China Roads and Bridges Corporation have won tenders for the upgrade of the roads.

I guess the good ones could not part with kickbacks and so may have missed the opportunity, some may be camping in their counties where it is easier to loot, some may have crossed to other EA countries, others brain-drained to UAE, African countries, Europe and the West. The other bunch is certainly corrupt and the rest perform shoddy jobs hence cannot compete. Otherwise how else can we explain the debacle?
