Kenyan Student Studying at University of Leeds in the UK Gunned Down By Police in Nairobi

A 23-year-old Kenyan student studying at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom has been gunned down in Nairobi.

Carilton David Maina was allegedly shot dead by police officers in Line Saba area, Kibra Estate on Sunday morning.

Carilton scored an A plain from Maseno School and his love for football earned him a scholarship to the UK university to pursue his academic and soccer dream.

Maina, who was taking a course in electronic and communication engineering at the University of Leeds, was on a long holiday and had returned to the country to visit his family.

“Carliton had just come for the December holidays then go back to the UK in January. If not for his life being ended by a bullet from rogue police. Carilton had just come from watching a football match at the nearest movie shop, being a fanatic football fan and as a matter of fact a goalkeeper for his local side FC Interdjinamory from Kenyatta Hospital Estate,” a resident, Collins Onyango says.

However, Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri says the victim was part of a gang that has been terrorizing residents.

“The police received a call from the members of the public who said that they were being mugged by a group of youths. It is then that the police acted and shot one on the spot,” says Muchiri.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Maina’s mother says his son had come to visit her and discuss his academics as he had stayed longer than expected.

Reports indicate that a police officer went ahead to shoot dead Maina despite surrendering. His family and residents are seeking justice for their son over what they say is another case of extra-judicial killing.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has constituted a team to investigate the incident.

  1. The Kenya police Force needs…
The Kenya police Force needs Anti-Stressants; they are too Stressed and under Siege (by runaway Crime in the City).?

  2. “However, Kilimani OCPD…
“However, Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri says the victim was part of a gang that has been terrorizing residents.” This is a careless and heartless response from an OCPD. How sure is he that the guy was part of a gang? Where is the evidence that Kenyan police did thorough investigation and found him to be guilty and worthy of murder? They simply go by mere allegations? Who gave the order for shoot to kill even in situations where the targets are not armed or have surrendered by raising their hands in the air? These OCPD must be fired instantaneously including those involved. Without a doubt this young man wasn’t a thug! He had so many great things going for him and his life could have been brighter. Quite upsetting indeed. RIP.

  3. This is very sad.I guess…
This is very sad.I guess there are many questions to be answered such as:
Was Maina indeed with these rogue kids
Are these kids(some) in custody of police
Can these kids identify Maina as a partner in crime
Was the cop’s life in danger, in other words was the shooting unavoidable
Is it a question of mistaken identity
I hope the police get to the bottom of this ,and have justice served.Certainly someone is responsible.

  4. Shoot to kill and ask…
Shoot to kill and ask questions later. That’s the maxim of our police force. It’s no wonder we have lost very many innocent lives at the hands of our law enforcers.

  5. The cop who shot this guy…
The cop who shot this guy was careless…once residents complain about a certain group, cops should arrest and detain the suspects then proceed to investigations.
This was so unfair…sorry to the family, friends and all those affected.
    RIP fellow comrade, Maina.
