Embattled Migori Governor Okoth Obado has added his voice to the ongoing debate on a referendum to introduce changes to the Constitution.
Obado, who is charged with the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, has opposed calls for referendum, terming it a misplaced priority and a waste of time.
Governor Obado says leaders should focus on creating employment opportunities for the youth instead of pushing for changes to the law.
“Let all our leaders think about providing employment for our people instead of rushing to things like referendum… that is a waste of time,” says Obado.
“If somebody is interested in bringing a referendum, let us first of all be shown how many new enterprises and factories they want to give our farmers. If we can start with that then the referendum can come later on.”
His stand contradicts that of his party, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and its leader Raila Odinga, who has been vocal about the need to amend the Constitution to abolish the presidential system of government.
“We need to think strategically as a country to see to it that we bring in industries that can absorb our youth into meaningful employment,” he says.
“If we take them to school and they get their good papers, then they come and put those papers in their stores and suitcases without giving them work to do, we will be spoiling our own country.”
Obado appears to side with his newly-found ally, Deputy President William Ruto who has been skeptical about the referendum talk.
