A man accused of defrauding a businesswoman of Sh1.6 million has been charged in court.
Fredrick Muhanji alias Douglas Simiyu is said to have obtained the money from Beatrice Mainga in Nairobi’s Kilimani estate between September 1st and October 8th after deceiving her with a fake State House tender.
The prosecution says the accused person promised to offer Ms. Mainga a contract for the supply of 116 laptops to State House worth Sh9 million.
Simiyu allegedly posed as a senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer stationed at State House and demanded the cash from the woman as commission.
Ms. Mainga says she deposited Sh300,000 to an account given by the suspect before depositing the second batch of Sh1 million and another of Sh300,000.
Appearing before Nairobi senior principal magistrate Martha Mutuku, Muhaji has been charged with obtaining money under false pretenses.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been released on Sh1 million bond with a surety of similar amount and an alternative of Sh500,000 cash bail.
Muhaji is facing similar charges before Kiambu and Kakamega courts and is out on bond. In one of the separate cases, Muhaji is accused of obtaining Sh240 million from Charles Gathii Ng’ang’a after deceiving him with a tender for supply of 1,200 HP computers to State House.
