At least 2,585 Kenyans have lost their lives in road accidents between January and November this year, latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows.
This is an increase from 2,331 deaths recorded in the the same period in 2017.
Those who have lost their lives in that period include 971 pedestrians, 256 drivers, 633 passengers, 209 pillion passengers, 44 bicycle cyclists and 472 motorbike riders.
A total of 8,272 people sustained injuries, a growth from the 6,789 people who were injured the previous year.
NTSA Director-General Francis Meja says Nairobi County leads in the number of road crashes followed by Kiambu and Nakuru. Speeding and drunk driving are listed as the main causes of accidents.
Meja says 92 percent of accidents in the country are as a result of human error and negligence while vehicles’ mechanical problems account for five percent. Environmental issues account for three percent.
Last month, a road accident at Fort Ternan, Kericho involving a Kakamega-bound 63-seater bus claimed the lives of more than 50 lives. The driver of the speeding bus is said to have lost control of the vehicle before rolling several times and landing in a ditch.
