Traders Count Huge Losses as Another Inferno Razes Down Several Shops at Nairobi's Gikomba Market

Traders at Nairobi’s largest market Gikomba are counting huge losses running into millions of shillings after yet another fire early Wednesday morning razed down several stalls.

The inferno is reported to have broken out at around 2am and continued for hours as several response teams including the Kenya Red Cross and Nairobi County fire department bustled to contain it.

No casualties have been reported as authorities launch investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

The fire comes barely five months after yet another inferno broke out at the facility on June 29th, leaving 16 people dead and more than 70 others injured.

President Kenyatta ordered for comprehensive investigations into the cause of the fire, but authorities are yet to release their findings five months on.

Fire tragedies at the market are seemingly becoming an annual occurrence with some traders and leaders reading mischief from them.

The latest fire incident marks the 9th time an inferno has broken out at Gikomba market in a span of eight years.

“We do not know the state of our businesses since we have not been allowed access by the officers manning,” Joan Njeri, a trader at the market says.

  1. It’s time for these traders…
It’s time for these traders to unite and form a corporation. Rebuilt their market. Put Camera’s around 24 hours surveillance and find out who is bound to benefit from their miseries. Find out who wants to take over that valuable land by death and misery of others. As our people take their loved ones to the grave in misery and close their businesses, who will set up new businesses and go laughing and smiling all the way to the bank? As soon as we find out who wants that piece of land through corruption, we Will know who is behind the misery. God give Kenya leaders not politicians.God help Kenya!!!
