Over 20 MPs from the Coast Endorse Deputy President Ruto's 2022 Presidential Bid

More than 20 Opposition allied Members of Parliament drawn from the Coast region have endorsed Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

The MPs declared their support for Ruto’s State House ambition when they accompanied him to the launch of the construction of the Sh2.3 billion Baricho bridge in Kilifi.

Speaking at the function, MPs Suleiman Dori (Msambweni) and Aisha Jumwa (Malindi) who were recently summoned by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party for backing Ruto said they will not be cowed into withdrawing their support for the Deputy President.

“Let us stop these intimidations. Let us find ways of uniting the people of the Coast and work with the government. We do not want to be left behind,” said Dori.

“We were with you in 2013 and 2017. You got our support but you did not win. Why should you feel bad if we shift our support to the DP? He has at the moment shown us he is the only person who cares about us,” Dori added.

MPs who vowed to work with Ruto include Ali Wario of Bura, Garsen’s Hashaka Wario, Owen Baya (Kilifi North), Tana River Senator Juma Wario, Said Haribae (Galole), Senator Anuar Toitiptip of Lamu, Badi Twalib (Jomvu), Stanley Muthama of Lamu West and Danson Mwashako (Wundanyi).

Others were Benjamin Tayari of Kinango, nominated Senator Christine Zawadi, Khatib Mwashetani of Lunga Lunga), Shariff Ali of Lamu East,  Lydia Haika (Taita Taveta), Michel Kingi of Magarini, Gertrude Mbeyu (Kilifi) and and Mohammed Ali (Nyali).

On his part, the Deputy President said the project was part of the Jubilee government election pledges to the people of Kilifi.

“The construction of this bridge is part of our efforts to initiate projects that have direct impact on the lives of Kenyans,” Ruto said.

“We should now focus our energies on the construction of roads, provision of health, education, connection of electricity among other development projects,” said Ruto.

“Some leaders should stop being worried. We are here for development since the time for politics will come. Let’s focus our energies on development,” he said at Kakuyuni in Malindi.
