At least 10 Al-Shabaab militants have been killed by soldiers drawn from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
The fighters were killed on Monday after Kenyan soldiers ambushed them in a base in Taksile area, Pandanguo, Lamu County minutes to 7:00 am. Seven AK47 rifles and several rounds of ammunition were found during the dawn operation.
In a statement, Kenya Defense Forces spokesperson Paul Njuguna said three military officers sustained injuries during the operation. He said more officers were sent to the area to pursue other terrorists who escaped with injuries.
“Today, at around 06:45am, Kenya Defence Forces soldiers operating in Lamu County launched an attack on Al Shabaab Militants in the area of Taksile, North of Pandanguo,” he stated.
“Following the incident, 10 Al Shabaab militants were killed. The soldiers also recovered seven AK 47 rifles and assorted ammunition. The soldiers are in pursuit of other militants who escaped with injuries.”
He urged local residents to collaborate with security officers in weeding out the terrorists from the area.
“Locals are requested to share information with the security officials in the area, as the fleeing and wounded terrorists may seek assistance from them,” reads the statement signed by KDF Colonel, Public Affairs, Paul Njuguna.
“The locals are urged to participate in weeding out lurking terror elements in their midst, in order to assist in the progressive pacification of Lamu County.”
Pandanguo is one of the areas that has experienced attacks by the Somalia-based rag-tag militia. Last year, the militants raided a local police post and made away with drugs from a health centre.
