Sonko Hints at Picking President Uhuru’s Nephew Jomo Gecaga as Nairobi Deputy Governor

Governor Mike Sonko has hinted at picking President Uhuru Kenyatta’s nephew Jomo Gecaga as Nairobi Deputy Governor.

Speaking at his rural home in Mua, Machakos County during the anniversary of his late father, Sonko said he would love to have Gecaga as his deputy but noted that he was still consulting with the Jubilee Party leadership on who will fill the vacant seat. Gecaga is currently President Kenyatta’s personal assistant.

“Hata yeye [Jomo Gecaga] ningependa akuwe deputy governor lakini bado tunaconsult (I would love to have him as deputy governor, but we are still consulting),” Sonko said when introduced Gecaga to those attending the ceremony.

The Governor further said he should be given time to nominate the right candidate who will not be rejected by the County Assembly like his previous nominee, lawyer Miguna Miguna.

“Mimi nilichagua deputy gavana miezi kidogo iliyopita, jina ikaenda assembly ikaangushwa sasa ningependa mnipatie time yakuconsult sitaki kuleta mtu hapa anisumbue…Kwa sababu mimi ni mtu wa Jubilee naconsult party na Rais, saa hii hakuna presha ile wakati walinipea presha nikawapatia Miguna. Mimi sitaki kupewa presha nikipewa presha nitawaletea Miguna mwingine muangushe kwa hivyo tutangoja Rais arudi tuconsult,” Sonko added as quoted on Nairobi News.

Recently, Sonko said he had settled on four female candidates for the position including former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, lawyer Karen Nyamu, businesswoman Agnes Kagure and Jane Weru.

The position fell vacant after the resignation of former Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe earlier this year.
