Raila Calls for Justice for Slain University Student Sharon Otieno

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for a speedy probe into the murder of the 26-year-old Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

Odinga said those behind her killing should be brought to book and urged relevant authorities to expedite the investigation process.

“I would like to call upon the relevant investigative agencies to move with speed to ensure that those involved in her killing are brought to book. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Raila said in a tweet.

The lifeless body of the second-year student was retrieved from Kodera Forest, Homa Bay County on Wednesday morning, two days after she was abducted from a hotel in Rongo town.

She was kidnapped alongside a Nation journalist who was pursuing a story where Sharon was allegedly implicating Migori Governor Okoth Obado in a love triangle. Sharon accused the Governor of impregnating and abandoning her.

The two had met at the hotel when they were taken away by unknown men, but the journalist managed to jump out of the moving vehicle a few kilometers away.

The government has promised swift action against the perpetrators of the heinous act.

“The matter will be expeditiously investigated and the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be made to face the full force of the law,” Government spokesman Erick Kiraithe said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti on Wednesday deployed a homicide squad to Migori County to investigate her death. Sharon was reportedly seven months pregnant.
