A man was on Monday arraigned before a Nairobi court over laptops tender under the name of Office of the Deputy President.
The suspect by the name Daddy Awiti was accused of attempting to defraud Deputy President William Ruto’s office by claiming that he could supply 2,800 HP laptops worth Sh180 million.
Awiti allegedly committed the offence between June 1st and August 12th, 2018 together with others who were not in court.
“With intent to defraud by means of offering tender documents under the name of office of Deputy President, he (Daddy Awiti) falsely pretended that he was carrying out a genuine tender business and that he was able to deliver 2,800 pieces of HP laptops valued at Sh180 million to the office of the deputy president a fact he knew to be false,” read the charge sheet.
“Jointly with others not before court, the accused with intend to defraud …[offered] tender documents under the name of the office of the deputy president while falsely pretending that they were genuine,” prosecution told court.
He also faces a second count of obtaining the 2,800 electronic devices by false pretense from a Nairobi-based company.
The accused person denied the charges and was freed on Sh5 million bond or cash bail of Sh3 million. The case will be mentioned on August 22nd.
Awiti was among seven suspects arrested last week by detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Westlands, Nairobi in possession of more than 700 laptops.
The suspects are said to be part of a racket that has been using the office of the Deputy President to falsely obtain the laptops from different companies and individuals.
