Kenya is set to field its candidature for a position at the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) during the next elections.
This comes after Tuesday Cabinet approval for the country to contest for a non-permanent membership at the Council.
Elections for positions in the Council will be held at the 74th session of the United Nations in 2020 with countries elected serving a one-year term between 2021 and 2022.
Capital FM reports that “a campaign strategy has already been drawn.”
Cabinet said membership of the United Nations Security Council will boost Kenya’s influence in international decision-making “particularly matters of peace and security for the benefit of the nation and the region at large.”
“Membership of the UN Security Council will enhance Kenya’s influence in international decision-making, particularly on matters of peace and security for the benefit of the nation and the region at large. A campaign strategy has already been drawn,” reads the statement by the cabinet.
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the UN whose main mandate is maintaining peace and security in the world. It is also charged with admitting new members into the United Nations.
“We shall be seeking for a seat in the United Nations Security Council for the period of 2021-2022,” Foreign Affairs CS Ambassador Monicah Juma said while announcing Kenya’s bid for the seat in March this year.
“Kenya’s candidature to the United Nations Security Council is informed by the critical role that we continue to play in maintaining global peace and stability,” Ambassador Juma said
“As a country we believe that peace, security and development are interlinked and mutually reinforcing, and neither can be achieved without the other,” Ambassador Juma said.
