Proprietors of Nairobi’s high-end shopping mall Village Market have dismissed claims that the structure sits on riparian land.
In a statement, the mall’s management termed as false reports on the media that the structure is earmarked for demolition in the ongoing crackdown on buildings located on or near rivers banks.
The owners said they have not issued with any notices of demolition as reported by a section of local news outlets.
“Media articles and reports alleging that the Village Market and the Tribe Hotel lie on wetland and are earmarked for demolition are not true,” read part of the statement.
Village Market was first opened in 1995 and offers a variety of recreational facilities including swimming pools, water slides area, bowling and mini-golf facility.
The adjoining five-star Tribe Hotel has 142 guest rooms and a new three-star business hotel with 215 rooms is complete and will be opened soon.
Last week, structures worth billions of shillings were reduced to rubble as the government moves to reclaim riparian land. South End Mall, Ukay Mall, a Shell Petrol station and a Java restaurant located in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area as well as sections of Hindu religious centre, Oshwal have so far been demolished.
